Counseling Philosophy:
My training is in systems theory which views relationships, past and present, as important to one's development. I find that it is valuable to understand the external context of one's life as it relates to an issue as well as one's internal thoughts and feelings. My approach is very collaborative and we will work together to gain a greater understanding of your concerns and build upon your own strengths to meet your goals. I will take time to truly understand who you are and what your concerns are about so that we can create a plan that will work for you.
With couples I draw upon the two most scientifically validated couples therapy approaches available. Gottman Couples Therapy and Emotion Focused Therapy explore how painful patterns, communication issues, and underlying differences can create cycles of hurt and distance in a relationship. We will work to uncover those cycles and learn new ways to communicate and connect.
Premarital Counseling
I offer a reduced rate for premarital counseling that includes the Prepare/Enrich relationship inventory which I am certified to administer. This inventory allows for a truly specialized premarital program which focuses on your strengths and areas of growth as a couple.
Supervision
I am an AAMFT approved supervisor. I have supervised counselors coming from programs with a marriage and family therapy focus as well as counselors whose programs were based on general mental health counseling. Supervising is one of my greatest passions, and, like my counseling philosophy, I work very collaboratively with those who I supervise. I like to blend moments of giving direct input with moments of coming to a conclusion together. I have led both individual supervision and group supervision and am open to both.
